  3. COMMITTEE WORK
  4. Much of the business of both Lords and Commons is 
  5. done in Committee. Like the Commons, the Lords has a 
  6. number of Select Committees. Unlike in the Commons, 
  7. these do not examine the work of specific Government 
  8. departments: instead they can be set up to investigate a 
  9. particular problem - for example the Medical Ethics 
  10. Committee. Permanent committees include a committee 
  11. scrutinising European legislation, the Science and Technology Committee, and the Select Committee on Delegated Powers and Deregulation.

  13. Also unlike the Commons, the House of Lords has no Standing
  14. Committees to do detailed work on Public Bills. This is because the Committee stage of a Bill's passage through the Lords is usually debated in the chamber, though certain bills may have their committee stage taken off the floor of the house.
